Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has threatened legal action against political activist and convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged false and defamatory statements made on social media.

The threat follows a series of posts on X and Facebook that Obi’s legal team describes as “false, malicious, and grossly defamatory,” aimed at tarnishing his reputation among Nigerians and the international community.

In a letter dated August 26, 2025, issued by the law firm of Alex Ejesieme and Co. and signed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Alex Ejesieme, Adeyanju is accused of repeatedly portraying Obi as a religious bigot, fraud, scum, and thief.

The letter also cited claims by Adeyanju alleging that Obi diverted Anambra State funds into family businesses, attempted to bribe him after a private meeting, and manipulated voters through religion during the 2023 presidential election.

Obi’s lawyers have demanded that Adeyanju immediately delete all the posts and issue a “full, unreserved, unqualified, and public apology” on his social media platforms and in three national newspapers.

The legal team warned that failure to comply within seven days would result in a lawsuit seeking aggravated damages, an injunction restraining further defamatory statements, and recovery of legal costs.

Responding on social media, Adeyanju dismissed Obi’s demands, writing on his official Facebook page that he “laughed so hard” upon receiving the letter and looked forward to a court showdown.

He described Obi as “a fraud parading himself as a messiah” and accused him of using his influence to shield supporters from legal scrutiny, referencing a separate dispute involving Adeyanju’s wife.
