Chaos has engulfed Balogun Market on Lagos Island following a violent clash between Yoruba and Igbo traders that reportedly left one person dead and several others unaccounted for.

According to a source at the market, the incident began when a dispute between two traders one Yoruba and one Igbo escalated into a physical fight. Both men allegedly used weapons during the altercation, resulting in the Yoruba trader being stabbed and later succumbing to his injuries.
The death triggered violent reprisals, with groups of Yoruba youths reportedly storming the market, attacking Igbo traders, and chasing anyone in their path. “Many of our Igbo brothers are missing. The entire market is not safe. Yoruba boys have taken over, and we fear for our lives,” the source said.
Authorities confirmed that the Igbo trader accused of stabbing the deceased has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Lion Building Police Command for interrogation.
Meanwhile, traders, including a hair vendor known as Hairlord, have appealed to the Lagos State Government and security agencies for urgent intervention to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as his line was reportedly busy.
