*Says Housing Minister, Renewed Hope Homes Discussing Apartments In Record Time
The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has dismissed reports claiming that the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team, have not received their tournament bonuses for their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph in Morocco.
Speaking on Arise TV’s morning program, Olopade clarified that all match bonuses and allowances have been paid to the players, except for one or two cases delayed by banking issues with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is actively working to fulfill pledges made by President Bola Tinubu, including a $100,000 reward (in naira equivalent), three-bedroom apartments, and national honors for each player.
The controversy arose after Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed frustration on a podcast, stating that the team had not received the promised $100,000 per player or other entitlements despite assurances that funds had been allocated. Olopade refuted these claims, citing direct communication with Ajibade and NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, during which the captain denied saying the bonuses were unpaid. “I know authoritatively that all their bonuses have been paid,” Olopade stated, emphasizing that payments, including approximately $33,000 per player, were made before the WAFCON final. “I have confirmed with the NFF [Nigeria Football Federation] and Ajibade. Except for one or two whose accounts have issues with the CBN, all their monies have been paid.”
Addressing the $100,000 presidential reward and apartments, Olopade dismissed suggestions of delays as politicization, noting ongoing efforts to expedite delivery. “A few days ago, Mallam Shehu Dikko was still talking to the Minister for Housing, and I sat down with the gentleman in charge of Renewed Hope Homes. Work has already started on how they will get the apartments in record time,” he said. He stressed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to honoring promises, citing a departure from past delays, such as the case of former Super Eagles coach Clemens Westerhof, whose rewards were fulfilled years later with NSC intervention.
Olopade urged the media to verify claims before reporting, stating, “To now say the bonuses have not been paid is not true. We deserve an apology for that because it is wrong.” He highlighted the NSC’s transparent approach, contrasting it with past administrations where pledges often faced delays or denials. While declining to specify exact timelines or funding sources on air, he assured that the rewards would be delivered “in record time.”
The Director-General also touched on broader NSC initiatives, including reforms to ensure inclusive sports federation elections. He cited the seamless Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) election and adjustments to the weightlifting and boxing federation elections to accommodate stakeholders, reflecting the NSC’s advisory role. “Our strategy is simple: let people who are passionate about sport come on board, share the President’s vision, and create a sports economy ecosystem,” Olopade said.
