Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to challenge and unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye said he could no longer in good conscience participate in the party’s activities or support its political agenda.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels of involvement,” the letter read in part.

He lamented that the PDP lacks the “potency and capacity” to rescue Nigeria from the grip of what he described as political decay under the APC.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye stated.

The former lawmaker, who served in the 8th Senate, added that after careful reflection, he had come to the conclusion that remaining in the PDP was no longer tenable.

“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he wrote. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership.”

Melaye’s exit from the PDP adds to the wave of internal tensions within the party, which has faced a series of defections and leadership crises in recent years.
