Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has continued to debunk allegations made by prominent Benue indigenes accusing him and the state of harbouring killer herdsmen responsible for the mass killings of innocent residents in Benue State.

Governor Sule has, however, threatened to take legal action against his accusers if the statements are not retracted with a formal apology.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday in Lafia, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Addra, expressed dismay over the persistent allegations from Benue indigenes accusing Governor Sule and the Nasarawa State government of sheltering perpetrators of violence in Benue.
“We are constrained to respond to a series of allegations made against the person of the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, and the Government of Nasarawa State by some prominent sons and daughters of Benue State, following the unfortunate killings in that state,” Addra stated.
“In particular, the attention of Governor Sule, who also serves as Chairman of the North-Central Governors Forum, has been drawn to a malicious statement by Prof. Zachary Anger Gundu, a prominent Benue indigene and former Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council, Benue State University, Makurdi.
“In a viral video circulating on social media, Prof. Gundu made unguarded and direct accusations, claiming that Governor Sule is ‘masking the killings in Benue State’ and ‘forcefully taking over farmlands belonging to Tiv people in Nasarawa State and handing them over to Fulani herdsmen,’ among other allegations.”
Addra condemned the allegations, saying, “It is disheartening that Prof. Gundu would stoop so low and abandon caution to make such unsubstantiated and baseless claims against the Governor.
“Let it be known that Governor Sule, the Government, and the people of Nasarawa State are deeply pained by the killings in Benue State. However, we are equally disappointed by the string of false accusations coming from individuals who should know better, including respected sons and daughters of Benue State.
“The Governor has warned that unless an apology is issued and the defamatory statements retracted, he will be left with no choice but to seek legal redress.”
Addra noted that Governor Sule has consistently shown concern and empathy over the security situation in Benue and other parts of the North-Central region, in the spirit of brotherhood and good neighbourliness.
“We challenge Prof. Gundu to provide empirical evidence to support his claims — including proof of where these alleged killer herdsmen are being camped in Nasarawa State and the Governor’s supposed involvement.
“Failure to substantiate these allegations will leave Governor Abdullahi Sule with no option but to institute legal action against the former Pro-Chancellor and his co-travellers,” he added.
