The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially appointed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, as the new National Chairman of the party. This decision follows the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje on June 27.

The nomination was made by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), and seconded by Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives. The NEC meeting took place at the Presidential Villa, where the consensus on Yilwatda’s appointment was reached.

Professor Yilwatda’s emergence signals a significant development in APC’s internal politics. Party leaders are optimistic that his leadership will help reposition the ruling party ahead of upcoming elections. His background combines technical expertise, electoral experience, and grassroots political engagement qualities viewed as critical for healing internal divisions and restoring public confidence.

Before joining partisan politics, Yilwatda had an extensive career in academia and public service. He was an engineering lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and later served as Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from 2017 to 2021. In this role, he supervised elections across Benue, Anambra, Osun, Rivers, and Cross River states.

In December 2021, Yilwatda resigned from INEC to pursue a political career in Plateau State, joining the APC and contesting for governor. Although he lost to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Minister of Humanitarian Affairs shortly after.

Yilwatda’s appointment as APC National Chairman is widely seen as a strategic move to restore cohesion within the party, address leadership instability, and counter declining support in some regions. The decision also brings renewed political focus to Plateau State, a region whose federal influence had waned in recent years.

A party insider described the appointment as “not just a win for the APC, but for the North Central region,” adding that Yilwatda’s leadership represents “a strategic choice to rebuild, rebrand, and reconnect with Nigerians.”
