The 2023 vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared that his former running mate, Peter Obi, is free to seek the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election, whether or not he (Baba-Ahmed) returns as his running mate.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed said the Labour Party remains open to Obi retaining its ticket in 2027, despite his recent participation in coalition talks led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“The Labour Party welcomes him to still come and retain the Labour Party ticket and contest in 2027 with or without me,” Baba-Ahmed said. “And the ADC is welcome to adopt a southern candidate.”

The former senator, who ran alongside Obi in the 2023 presidential race, maintained that Nigeria urgently needs leaders with competence and compassion, not individuals who promise good governance but deliver failure.

“We want capacity. We want compassion. We want people who will develop Nigeria—leaders that matter, leaders that deliver promises, not those who will promise governance and deliver disaster,” he said.

Addressing concerns that Obi’s involvement in the ADC-led coalition amounted to anti-party activity, Baba-Ahmed dismissed such claims, describing the move as part of a broader political realignment.

“This is not an anti-party activity. It is an unfolding situation. The meaning of a coalition is that political parties, interest groups, and individuals are coming together,” he explained. “I attended coalition meetings. Peter Obi is welcome to continue to attend those coalition meetings.”

On the contentious issue of power rotation ahead of 2027, Baba-Ahmed stated clearly that he supports a southern presidency, aligning with widespread calls for equity and regional balance in national leadership.

Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, according to official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
