Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for an urgent upward review of salaries for rank-and-file officers of the Nigeria Police Force, proposing a minimum monthly wage of ₦500,000.

Sowore made the call on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief.” He argued that it was unjustifiable for senators to take home ₦30 million monthly while the average policeman earns less than ₦100,000.

“We’re concerned about the people who are really doing the work, and it is time for us to be on their side,” Sowore said. “An average senator takes home ₦30 million per month, but the senator can’t leave home except they are accompanied by the police. So, why is it that senators are earning ₦30 million and a policeman can’t earn ₦500,000 monthly?”

The activist said ₦500,000 — roughly $300 — is not excessive when placed against global standards and the economic hardship in Nigeria.

“What is ₦500,000 really? Some people earn that in a day elsewhere, not in Nigeria,” he added.

Sowore also criticised the Police Pension Limited, a firm responsible for managing officers’ retirement funds, noting the disparity between the earnings of its staff and the welfare of the retired policemen they serve.

“The pension company staff reportedly earn around ₦1 million per month, yet those whose pensions they manage are dying in poverty,” he said. “How do you serve a country for 35 years and your salary is just ₦57,000 or ₦140,000 depending on rank?”

He revealed that a planned July 21 protest against poor police remuneration was initiated by officers themselves, who are reportedly prepared to “down tools” if no action is taken.

Sowore urged Nigerians, especially celebrity entertainers who often benefit from police escort services, to join the nationwide demonstration in solidarity.

“I know those that accompany celebrities get tips and incentives, but at the end of the day, it’s important that we all step out for the police,” he said.

The protest is expected to highlight worsening inflation, poor pension administration, and widespread dissatisfaction within the ranks of the police force.
