The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has launched a fresh attack on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of authoritarian leadership and failing to improve the lives of Abuja residents.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm on Tuesday, Senator Kingibe described Wike as having an “emperor mentality” and said his administration had failed to address critical issues such as insecurity, unpaid salaries, and infrastructural decay.

“In spite of the things I don’t like that he is doing, I tried to tone down my public criticisms. But it has made no difference because he has an emperor mentality,” she said.

The senator further alleged that Wike excluded her from the budget drafting process and has refused to prioritise healthcare, education, and agriculture in the FCT.

Kingibe, who was elected under the Labour Party (LP), said the city’s worsening insecurity — including kidnappings and ‘one-chance’ robberies — is a direct result of Wike’s negligence. She also criticised the lack of functioning streetlights in Abuja, which she says contributes to the capital’s growing security crisis.

On infrastructure, Kingibe said that former FCT Minister Nasir El-Rufai had a more impactful tenure than Wike, challenging widespread claims about Wike’s achievements.

She revealed that she had even reported the minister to Senate President Godswill Akpabio after he abruptly ended a call she initiated in an attempt to mend fences.

Kingibe also used the platform to address the internal crisis rocking the Labour Party. She admitted that the party was fractured and in no shape to win elections, including the upcoming FCT local council polls.

“Yes, I am still a member of the Labour Party, but I support the ADC,” she declared, aligning herself with the newly adopted opposition coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“There are two factions of the Labour Party right now. It’s broken. It cannot win any election in its current state,” Kingibe said, citing this as the reason behind her support for the ADC, which she says has “credible candidates.”

Asked whether she might formally defect from the LP if the party fails to resolve its internal conflict, Kingibe responded, “Maybe, I might eventually.”

The senator’s remarks come just days after a high-profile opposition coalition, featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and several ex-ministers and governors, endorsed the ADC as a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The coalition is hoping to leverage the combined electoral strength of Atiku and Obi, who together garnered over 12 million votes in the 2023 presidential election — more than the total votes declared for President Bola Tinubu.
