Vice President Kashim Shettima has condemned the suicide bombing that struck a food joint in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State on Friday night, killing at least 24 people and injuring several others. The attack, believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram or ISWAP insurgents, was described by Shettima as a “heinous act of terrorism against innocent civilians.”

Shettima extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Borno State, reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice. “The federal government will not relent in our efforts to ensure that those responsible for this despicable act face the full weight of the law,” he stated through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha.

The Vice President also directed relevant agencies to expedite investigations and provide prompt support to those affected. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this senseless act of violence. The government stands with them in this difficult time and will provide all necessary support,” Shettima added.

The suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a crowded food joint, according to Assistant Superintendent Nahun Daso, spokesman for the Borno State Police Command. The blast left the bomber’s body severely dismembered, with only the head recovered. A joint response team from the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) Unit, Military, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters secured the scene, which was thoroughly searched for additional explosives with none found.

Injured victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where some remain under treatment. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital mortuary. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and contact their families for proper burial.

Shettima, who previously served as Borno State governor, reiterated the administration’s resolve to sustain gains in the fight against terrorism and restore lasting peace. “The administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security to the Northeast and all parts of Nigeria. We will not allow our enemies to undermine the progress we have made in degrading their capabilities,” he affirmed.

Following recent attacks by armed herdsmen in Benue State that left nearly 200 people dead, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has deployed an additional 300 troops and delivered critical combat equipment to boost security in the North Central geo-political zone.

The deployment includes over 100 motorcycles, troop-carrying vehicles (TCVs), and personal protective gear aimed at improving mobility, rapid response, and combat readiness in challenging terrains.

During his visit to the Joint Task Force (JTF) Headquarters in Makurdi, General Oluyede reassured residents of Benue and the wider region of the army’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace. “There are ongoing efforts behind the scenes to make sure this does not happen again. As far as the killings are concerned, we will go after them—and by God’s grace, we will get them,” he said.

Speaking at a media chat in Akure, Ondo State, the COAS emphasized the need for community cooperation, especially in providing timely intelligence to improve security responses. He acknowledged that some attackers might be foreigners and noted the challenges posed by Nigeria’s vast terrain.

President Tinubu has ordered intensified operations across troubled states including Benue, Plateau, and Kwara, aiming to curb insecurity and protect lives and property.

The Kano State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into an explosion at Yongxing Steel Company on Ring Road, Mariri Quarters, which killed five people and injured 10 others.

Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori led early responders, including the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) teams, to secure the site and prevent further harm.

Police spokesman Hussaini Abdullahi said the explosion occurred while offloading scraps from a truck originating from Damaturu, Yobe State. The blast caused panic among residents, and injured victims were rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Five victims died while receiving treatment, and the police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation. They also called on residents to report any suspicious activities or useful information to the authorities.
