The Constitution Review Committee of the House of Representatives is set to conduct public hearings in all six of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones in July, aiming to gather citizens’ views on proposed constitutional amendments.

This was announced by the Committee Chairman and Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, during a joint session of consultants and secretariat staff from both the House and Senate Constitution Review Committees held in Abuja on Friday.

According to Kalu, the hearings will be held in two phases. The first phase, from July 11 to July 13, 2025, will cover the northern zones: North Central, North West, and North East. The second phase, scheduled from July 18 to July 20, 2025, will focus on the southern zones: South South, South East, and South West.

In the North Central zone, stakeholders from Kogi, Kwara, and Niger states will meet in Minna, while Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue states and the Federal Capital Territory will gather in Lafia. Kaduna will host participants from Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states in the North West, while Sokoto will serve Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. In the North East, Gombe will be the centre for Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba states, and Maiduguri will host Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

During the southern phase, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta states will convene in Yenagoa; Calabar will accommodate Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. In the South East, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu states will meet in Enugu, while Imo and Abia states will gather in Owerri. The South West hearings will be held in Lagos for Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states, and Akure will host Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti states.

Kalu emphasized the committee’s commitment to ensuring Nigerians’ voices are heard and incorporated into the constitutional amendment process. The committee is prioritizing amendments related to gender inclusion, police and security reforms, fiscal federalism, judicial reforms, and the devolution of powers.

Describing the review as one of the most comprehensive in Nigeria’s history, Kalu stated it aims to tackle fundamental governance challenges and strengthen democratic institutions through an inclusive and transparent process.

He called on Nigerians from all sectors to actively participate in the zonal hearings, underscoring that the process is designed to be people-driven and responsive to the nation’s realities.
