The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has condemned the brutal attack on the Yelwata community in Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed. He described the massacre as a mindless act of terror, not only against Benue but also a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of Nigeria as a whole.

IGP Egbetokun, who made the statement during his visit to the state for an on-the-spot assessment, pledged improved synergy with other security agencies to ensure lasting peace in Benue.

According to him, the bandits currently operating with impunity “will soon be a thing of the past because the day will surely come when they will come and never return again, and that day is fast approaching.”

“I am here in Benue State to commiserate with you—the government, the people, and the bereaved families affected by this tragedy,” he said.

“On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, I extend our deepest condolences to the people of Benue.”

He further stated that President Bola Tinubu was deeply saddened by the news of fresh attacks on yet another vulnerable community in the state and remains committed to ending the reign of criminal gangs and terrorism across the country.

The IGP assured the affected communities of the Police Force’s full support, acknowledging the persistent security challenges, particularly in border communities.

“We may not be able to cover every inch of the state, but we will deploy adequate personnel and resources. In synergy with sister security agencies, we will ensure the protection of lives and property,” he said.

In his remarks, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, commended President Tinubu and IGP Egbetokun for their prompt response to the tragedy.

“We are bleeding, we are in sorrow, we are no longer sleeping,” Governor Alia said. “But seeing you here uplifts our spirits and builds within us a renewed assurance of peace in our communities.”

He added that the IGP’s visit and assurance would help rekindle hope among the affected residents, reminding them that they are not alone.

“You will continue to stand with us in this fight against terrorists,” Alia affirmed.

The governor recalled that the state had previously recorded attacks across 17 local government areas. “Through our efforts, we reduced that number to nine, and then to six. However, in the last two months, there has been a resurgence,” he said.
