Legal activities have ground to a halt in Gombe State as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) commenced a one-week boycott of court proceedings, beginning today, in protest against what they described as poor working conditions and the controversial relocation of judges from the Gombe Division of the Court of Appeal.

The boycott, announced by the Gombe NBA Chairman, Benjamin Sati, is aimed at pressing the state government to urgently address the deteriorating state of judicial infrastructure, improve the welfare of legal practitioners, and reverse the decision to move the Court of Appeal panel to Maiduguri, Borno State.

“The relocation of judges and Appeal Court justices from the Gombe division is not only unjustified but undermines the accessibility of justice in our state,” Sati said. “We cannot continue to practice under these difficult conditions while core institutions are being stripped away from our jurisdiction.”

A visit to the Gombe State High Court revealed an eerie silence. Courtrooms remained locked, with dust gathering on tables and benches — a clear sign of halted activity in what is usually the heart of the state’s judicial process.

When contacted, the Gombe State Attorney General declined to engage directly with the protesting lawyers, stating tersely to reporters: “I will not join issues with the Nigerian Bar Association.”

The boycott has already started affecting legal timelines and proceedings across the state. Legal practitioners say the protest is not just about the relocation of the Appeal Court, but part of a broader struggle for improved funding, better facilities, and respect for the independence of the judiciary.

NBA members have vowed to sustain the protest for the full week, with the possibility of an extended boycott if their demands are not addressed.
