Mr. Odunayo Alade, father of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade who was tragically killed by a stray police bullet in Ibadan on Tuesday, has broken his silence on the heartbreaking incident, admitting that he drove against traffic in an attempt to reach his destination more quickly.

In a viral video shared on social media, Mr. Alade, speaking in Yoruba, explained that he made the decision to take a one-way route when officials of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) attempted to flag him down. Unbeknownst to him, the traffic enforcement team was being accompanied by armed police officers.

“Immediately he beat the traffic, there was a gunshot out of nowhere and suddenly, Kehinde started gasping for air. At that instance, we realized that the bullet had hit the boy,” said a relative who was in the vehicle during the incident.

The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across Oyo State and beyond, with many calling for justice for the young victim, who was on his way to sit for his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with his twin brother when the incident occurred.

In a statement released by the Oyo State Police Command, Public Relations Officer CSP Adewale Osifeso confirmed that the police officer who fired the fatal shot has been taken into custody, along with other members of the team involved in the operation.

“The command deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and has launched a full investigation as directed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebola Hamzat. The inquiry will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),” Osifeso stated.

According to police, the officers were working in partnership with OYTMA on routine traffic enforcement along Gbagi Market Road when Alade, driving a black Honda Accord (registration number FST 639 JJ), refused to stop and allegedly rammed into two OYTMA vehicles and a police patrol truck.

“Barricades were subsequently set up to stop the vehicle, but the driver broke through them. In the course of a hot pursuit, one of the officers fired at the vehicle in an attempt to immobilize it. Sadly, the bullet struck the boy who was sitting in the rear seat,” Osifeso added.

Kehinde was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, but was declared dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
