The Federal Government has approved the implementation of the Group Life Insurance Scheme for federal public servants for the 2025/2026 policy year.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the Executive Council of the Federation meeting.

She explained that the scheme provides a life insurance policy for every federal public servant, ensuring that in the unfortunate event of death, their next of kin will receive a financial benefit to help cushion the impact of the loss on their families.

“The Group Life Insurance Scheme is a welfare initiative aimed at providing some measure of financial relief to the families of deceased public servants,” she said.

Dr. Walson-Jack noted that the coverage extends beyond civil servants to include key government officials such as the President, Vice President, ministers, and staff of all federal ministries, departments, and agencies. It also encompasses paramilitary agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

According to her, the policy is valid for 12 months and takes effect from the date the premium is paid to the appointed insurance underwriters.

“For the 2025/2026 policy year, seventeen insurance underwriters have been appointed to manage the scheme,” she added.

Despite its existence under previous administrations, Walson-Jack acknowledged that awareness of the scheme remains low among public servants. To address this, she announced that a nationwide sensitization campaign will soon be launched to educate employees about their entitlements under the policy.

“This policy is for the benefit of all public servants, and we want them to understand their rights and the protection it offers,” she said.
