Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched a deadly assault on a Nigerian Army base in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, killing an unspecified number of soldiers and seizing military assets.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, around 3:00 a.m., targeting the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the 153 Task Force Battalion.

Local and military sources confirmed the incident, with reports indicating that the insurgents, believed to be from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), overpowered the troops, capturing some soldiers while others reportedly fled the scene.

“ISWAP has taken over Marte. An unspecified number of soldiers were killed, some captured, and many others have deserted,” one security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent. “The troops retreated toward Dikwa and are currently at the 24 Task Force Brigade in Dikwa.”

The attackers were said to have set fire to armoured vehicles and carted away arms and ammunition from the base.

Marte, which has been a hotspot for insurgent activity, lies approximately 38 kilometers from Dikwa, the headquarters of Dikwa Local Government Area.

A resident of Dikwa confirmed to our correspondent that gunshots were heard in the early hours of Monday, followed by the sighting of a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet hovering in the area—an indication of possible aerial response to the attack.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack, casualties, or current security status in Marte.
