A member of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau), has issued a grave warning over what he described as the unprecedented looting of military weapons by Boko Haram insurgents, claiming that arms worth trillions of naira have been carted away over the years during attacks on Nigerian military formations in the North East.

Gagdi made the statement on Tuesday during a House plenary session while contributing to a motion raised by Rep. Ahmed Satomi (APC, Borno), who called for an urgent probe into the recent fire outbreak at the 127 Battalion Armoury in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, and the escalating wave of insurgent attacks in Borno and Yobe States.

“The pictures I saw of Giwa Barracks are frightening,” Gagdi said. “I am scared whether the safety of Nigerian civilians can still be guaranteed. We have budgeted trillions for military assets, yet the platforms meant to protect Nigerians are falling into the hands of terrorists.”

He criticized what he called the government’s failure to act decisively, warning that continued inaction could trigger widespread public outrage and a loss of confidence in democratic institutions. “We are moving to a level where Nigerians will fight us the way they fight criminals and Boko Haram,” he warned. “If action is not taken, Nigerians will take their destinies into their own hands.”

Gagdi accused federal security agencies of neglecting early warnings, especially from state governors, and called on President Bola Tinubu to hold strategic military commanders accountable for operational failures.

Also lending his voice, Rep. Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno) described the resurgence of Boko Haram as “worse than ever,” revealing that the terrorists are now deploying weaponised drones and more advanced firepower than the Nigerian Army.

“I’m talking as a victim. In my constituency, 14 farmers were slaughtered in Chibok. In Izge, a captain and a senior officer were killed. Boko Haram is back — stronger, deadlier, and more equipped,” Jaha lamented.

Rep. Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) corroborated the reports, disclosing that over 20 soldiers were killed in a recent attack on the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Kala Balge, her constituency.

Rep. Lawan Shettima Ali (APC, Yobe) also suggested the possibility of foreign backing, pointing to the technological sophistication of Boko Haram fighters.

In response, the Nigerian military’s high command dismissed the claims as unverified. Major-General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, challenged Rep. Gagdi to provide concrete proof of the alleged loss.

“I don’t know where he got his figures from,” Kangye told Daily Trust. “If he has proof, let him come forward. Otherwise, such claims should be taken with caution.”

Security expert and former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor called the alleged loss of weapons “very dangerous,” warning that insurgents acquiring military-grade arms further tips the balance against state forces. “Military formations must be fortified urgently to prevent more of these incidents,” he said.

Trail of Recent Attacks:

  • May 7, 2025: Boko Haram killed an army captain and soldier in Izge, Gwoza LGA, Borno.
  • May 3, 2025: Insurgents killed four soldiers and overran 27 Taskforce Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe.
  • March 24, 2025: At least 20 Cameroonian soldiers killed as Boko Haram overran Wulgo base, seizing Shilka guns and other heavy weapons.
  • March 25, 2025: Attacks on Wajiroko and Goneri bases in Borno and Yobe led to troop dislodgement, looting of RPGs, GPMGs, and destruction of tanks and patrol vehicles.

Despite the resolution by the House to summon top security agencies for further briefing, many lawmakers insisted that words must now translate into decisive action to restore public confidence and national security.

“The Nigerian people are watching,” Gagdi concluded. “And they will not wait forever.”
