Controversial social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, was released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday evening, days after his controversial arrest sparked public outrage and protests.

His release was confirmed by human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to break the news.

“Thanks to unrelenting efforts of all, @thatverydarkman has been released from unjust detention at the @officialEFCC. He is with his ebullient lawyer, @adeyanjudeji,” Sowore tweeted.

VeryDarkMan was arrested last week near the premises of a commercial bank in Abuja under circumstances that quickly drew condemnation from online communities and civil society groups. The EFCC initially denied detaining him, but later confirmed on Tuesday that he was in custody in connection with petitions alleging “grave financial malfeasance.”

In its Tuesday statement, the EFCC disclosed that the activist had been granted administrative bail and would be released upon meeting the conditions, pending his arraignment in court.

VeryDarkMan’s arrest triggered widespread debate over the role of security agencies in handling high-profile individuals known for their outspoken views. Critics described his detention as a possible attempt to silence dissent, while others called for transparency regarding the allegations against him.
