Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has confirmed the arrest of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following multiple petitions filed by concerned individuals.

Speaking to BBC News Pidgin on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that the controversial activist was taken into custody to respond to a series of allegations.

“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale said.

While declining to confirm whether the arrest was connected to Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), he emphasized that the petitions came from different individuals, and the EFCC had a duty to act on them.

Oyewale further disclosed that the Commission intends to charge Otse to court. “We will release him when he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding,” he added.

The arrest, which reportedly occurred on Thursday, May 2, 2025, shortly after Otse visited a GTBank branch in Area 3, Garki, Abuja, with his mother and an associate, has ignited significant public reaction. According to reports, he was at the bank to resolve complaints over unauthorized deductions from his mother’s account when EFCC operatives apprehended him.

CCTV footage of the arrest has since gone viral, sparking widespread criticism and allegations of a coordinated effort to silence a known critic of government misconduct and institutional corruption.
