The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed reports that it approved the appointment of Hon. Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu as the Acting Chief Judge of Imo State, clarifying that the matter is yet to be considered by the Council.

In a press statement signed by Kemi Babalola Ogedengbe, Deputy Director (Information) of the NJC, the Council addressed reports circulating that Governor Hope Uzodimma had unilaterally appointed Justice Nzeukwu, who is fourth in the hierarchy of seniority in the Imo State High Court, as the Acting Chief Judge.

According to the NJC, the Governor had earlier written to the Council requesting approval for Justice Nzeukwu’s appointment. In his correspondence, Governor Uzodimma provided reasons why, in his view, the three most senior judges in the state’s High Court were not eligible for the position.

However, the NJC made it clear that:

  1. The Governor’s request is yet to be considered.
  2. No approval has been granted for the appointment of an Acting Chief Judge.
  3. The NJC is not a party to the purported appointment of Justice Nzeukwu.

The NJC also stated that deliberation on the Governor’s request is scheduled to take place at its next Council meeting on April 29 and 30, 2025.

This clarification follows disciplinary actions recently taken against the former Chief Judge of Imo State, which necessitated a vacancy in the office.

The NJC urged the public to disregard any claims that an Acting Chief Judge has been approved, as no such decision has been made by the Council.
