Kogi Central, constituents have initiated a recall process against their senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing dissatisfaction with her performance in addressing key issues such as poverty, infrastructure, and education.

The move is being carried out across the five local government areas of the district, with constituents required to sign a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). However, the process has raised concerns over political manipulation and deception.
According to a constituent, who requested anonymity, the recall effort transcends party lines and reflects growing discontent with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s representation. Despite this, there have been conflicting reports. A group under the banner of the “Good People of Kogi Central” has defended the senator, urging the electorate not to be deceived into signing forms under false pretenses.
While the recall process began in the local governments of Okehi, Okene, Ajaokuta, and Ogori/Magongo, it was reported that the fifth local government, Adavi, will hold its exercise on Thursday. Despite a large turnout in Okene, Okehi, and Ajaokuta, there was a notable low turnout in Ogori/Magongo.
Constituents have raised alarm over a suspected political scheme aimed at discrediting Akpoti-Uduaghan. Videos obtained by SaharaReporters show residents being misled into endorsing the recall under the guise of receiving financial support and empowerment. In one video, a resident revealed that they were initially told they were attending an empowerment event, only to find out they were being coerced into signing forms for the recall.
“I call the recall process a mess. Nobody was aware of it at all. These people deceived them with the promise of empowerment. It was only when we arrived that many of us realized this was not normal,” said Mrs. Joseph, one of the residents. She emphasized that many people were against the recall, seeing it as a fraudulent attempt by political figures loyal to former Governor Yahaya Bello to remove a senator they deemed a threat.
Sources have indicated that the recall process is part of a broader strategy orchestrated by Bello, with backing from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to oust Akpoti-Uduaghan. Credible reports suggest that a $2 million (N3 billion) deal was struck between Bello and Akpabio to fund the recall effort, with attempts to manipulate INEC records through forged signatures and other fraudulent means.
Despite these efforts, many constituents have resisted the recall campaign, asserting that Akpoti-Uduaghan has been delivering for the people of Kogi Central since her election to the Senate. “We are saying we don’t want to recall Natasha because she has been delivering for us,” a local resident confirmed.
