Tension flared outside the Edo State Election Tribunal yesterday as allegations emerged that thugs loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly led by Tony Kabaka, assaulted and harassed supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attempting to enter the courtroom for the ongoing hearing on the state’s election disputes.
Videos and eyewitness reports circulating on social media showed physical altercations among supporters, prompting widespread outrage. The alleged thuggery occurred within the premises of the tribunal, raising questions about security arrangements during such high-stakes proceedings.
Critics have pointed fingers at law enforcement agencies, accusing them of turning a blind eye to the violence. A user on social media lamented, “With the police and army doing nothing. If it was a peaceful protest, they would have killed, detained, and prosecuted people for treason. Sad reality within the premises of a tribunal!”
Amid the chaos, many are questioning why the tribunal proceedings remain in Edo State instead of being relocated to Abuja or another neutral venue. Concerns about impartiality and safety for all parties involved are growing louder.
One commentator asked, “How can the tribunal not transfer its proceedings to Abuja or somewhere else?” Others pointed out that such disturbances could compromise the integrity of the tribunal’s decisions.

Public reactions to the events were overwhelmingly critical. Social media users expressed frustration with the perceived inaction of the Nigeria Police Force, describing them as “incapable of doing their job fairly.” Others highlighted the broader issue of political immaturity and the need for better leadership.
Barrister Frank, a user on Twitter, remarked, “We are not yet mature to lead ourselves. Abeg, England, come back.” Another lamented, “Is this a country?”
As tensions escalate, calls for a more robust security presence and accountability in tribunal-related events are mounting. Legal professionals and political observers emphasize the need for law enforcement agencies to maintain order and ensure a fair process, free from intimidation and violence.
