The Senate has made changes to the membership of the 10-man committee established on Wednesday to work with the Presidency on resolving contentious issues in the Tax Reform Bills.

On Thursday, at the beginning of the plenary session, the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), removed the Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), from the committee and replaced him with Senator Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central).

The committee, led by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), also includes Senators Adamu Ailero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Orji Kalu (APC, Abia North), Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), Titus Zam (APC, Benue South), Abdullahi Yahaya (PDP, Kebbi North), Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).

The decision to set up the committee came after the Senate faced criticism from within and outside regarding the tax reform bills forwarded by President Bola Tinubu for consideration. In a sudden change of plan, the Senate suspended further legislative actions on the bills and mandated its Committee on Finance to halt progress on the bills that had passed for second reading last week.

President Tinubu transmitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on September 3, 2024, following the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms. The bills include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

The National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had requested that President Tinubu withdraw the bills for wider consultation. However, the President responded on October 31, 2024, stating that the bills should be allowed to go through the required legislative processes, providing Nigerians with the opportunity to get details on the bills and make their inputs during the public hearing stage.
