The Senate on Tuesday held a valedictory session to honor the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, APC, Anambra South, who passed away on July 26, 2024.

The session, which was the sole item on the Order Paper, witnessed tributes from senators and dignitaries who celebrated his contributions to politics, business, and humanity.
As part of the tribute, the Senate resolved to send a delegation to condole with his family and the people of Anambra State. It also announced plans to immortalize Ubah by naming a hall in the Senate after him.
Senators observed a minute of silence in honor of Ubah, who served in both the 9th and 10th Senates and was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream. Born on September 3, 1971, Ubah was remembered for his grassroots connection and commitment to public service.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with Ubah’s wife, children, and relatives, attended the session. Other attendees included former Anambra Governor and Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige, and Mrs. Nnoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President.
Vice President Shettima praised Ubah’s generosity and described him as a bridge-builder who broke down political and ethnic barriers. Recalling a gesture during his tenure as Borno State Governor, Shettima noted that Ubah had donated ₦50 million to aid the state during a Boko Haram crisis.
“The late Senator Ubah was one of the brightest stars of the 9th Senate. His political dexterity and grassroots affiliation set him apart. His generosity knew no bounds, and his legacy of service to humanity will not be forgotten,” Shettima said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio described Ubah as a consummate businessman, a passionate advocate for his community, and a quintessential public servant.
“Senator Ubah’s death is a loss to Anambra, Nnewi, and Nigeria as a whole. His commitment to the South East Development Commission was a testament to his vision for empowering his region,” Akpabio said.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also paid glowing tributes. Jibrin hailed Ubah as a patriotic Nigerian and philanthropist, while Bamidele highlighted his charisma and dedication to advancing the APC’s agenda.
Prior to the session, Ubah’s remains were laid in state at the Senate chamber’s foyer. The session lasted three hours, with lawmakers reflecting on his impactful career and contributions.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Ubah’s legacy, emphasizing the need to celebrate his life and contributions to the nation.
