The Senate ad hoc committee investigating alleged corruption and inefficiency at Ajaokuta Steel Company and the National Iron Ore Mining Company has uncovered ongoing illegal mining activities within the organisation’s location in the Itakpe site in Kogi State.

During a recent oversight visit, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central raised concerns over the unauthorised extraction of gold and other valuable minerals within NIOMCO’s premises.

She noted that despite the company halting official mining operations in 2008, illegal miners had continued to exploit the area.

The committee discovered that miners, allegedly from northern Nigeria, had been accessing the site without restrictions due to a lack of perimeter fencing.

She said, “These miners reportedly work for various gold dealers, operating with little regard for security or regulations.”

The acting Sole Administrator of NIOMCO, Isinmidun Loto, confirmed that illegal mining had become a major obstacle for the company.

He appealed to lawmakers for intervention, urging federal support to enhance security and safeguard the company’s equipment, which is valued at billions of dollars.

In its findings, the Senate committee highlighted the urgent need for federal action to prevent further illegal activities and avert a potential breakdown of law and order.
