Hon. Engr. Fom Dalyop Chollom, Member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency of Plateau State in the National Assembly, stated that the Plateau State Assembly’s decision to reduce the tenure of local government councils to two years is unconstitutional.

Rep Chollom argued that the Supreme Court’s judgment on the financial autonomy of local governments recognized their four-year tenure as stipulated in the Constitution. “Anyone who attempts to reduce this tenure is essentially challenging the Supreme Court’s judgment and the constitution itself,” he said, adding that the matter could be contested in court.

The legislator also highlighted his efforts to provide good representation and alleviate the suffering of his constituents. He recently organized an empowerment program benefiting 400 participants across various trades, with plans for more initiatives in the future.

“My goal is to continue this effort throughout my life. I want to establish a foundation to keep searching for and nurturing talents and skills, to improve the living conditions of our people,” Rep Chollom stated. He emphasized that the beneficiaries were selected based on vulnerability and need, rather than political affiliation.

Rep Chollom also discussed his ongoing projects in the constituency, including the rehabilitation of water supply systems, electrification of villages, renovation of schools, and construction of a clinic. He expressed his commitment to completing meaningful projects initiated by his predecessors, as long as they have a real impact on the community.

As the local government elections approach, Rep Chollom expressed confidence in the Labour Party’s prospects, stating that the party would participate and win massively in various local government councils.
