The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding the recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g) with batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany.

The recall is due to the presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), a chemical prohibited in cosmetic products.

According to NAFDAC, the Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap does not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation as it contains BMHCA, which is banned in cosmetic products due to its potential to harm the reproductive system, cause harm to unborn children, and trigger skin sensitization. As a result, some regulatory and public authorities in the EU have placed a ban on the marketing of the product.

In addition to the Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, NAFDAC has provided a list of other Dove cosmetic products that have been recalled or banned in other countries due to the presence of BMHCA. These products include body creams, deodorants, shower gels, and cosmetic sets manufactured in the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and the Czech Republic.

NAFDAC has emphasized that the importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria as per the restricted and import prohibition list. Furthermore, soaps and cosmetics are among the items ineligible for foreign exchange to import in Nigeria. The affected Dove products are also not available in the NAFDAC database.

NAFDAC has advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the mentioned products. Those in possession of the products should discontinue sale or use and submit the stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events experienced with the use of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety application available for download on Android and iOS stores.

In a related recall, it was discovered on July 7, 2023, that UK users faced serious health risks when using the Caro White Intensive Care Lightening Beauty Cream that was marketed on eBay. Despite not being mentioned on the package, the product examination confirmed the presence of hydroquinone, another forbidden chemical, and clobetasol propionate, a banned compound in cosmetic products, at 422 mg/kg (0.042% w/w).

The lack of proper labelling and safety markings raised additional safety concerns. Following these findings, eBay removed the listing, and consumers were advised to discontinue use immediately.
