On Saturday, security operatives dispersed protesters demonstrating in front of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The protesters had defied a court order secured by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, which restricted them to the stadium grounds.

Irked by the protesters’ disobedience, security operatives fired teargas at them and arrested some of the demonstrators who had converged outside the stadium. The protesters had initially demanded to use Eagle Square for their gathering but were denied access.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) authorities had obtained a court order limiting the protesters to the MKO Abiola National Stadium. However, on the third day of the protest, the demonstrators stayed away from the venue in the early hours of the day.

As the protesters started regrouping in small numbers around 11 am, just as they were about to form a large group, the police fired gunshots and teargas to disperse them. They also arrested all those present, including journalists who identified themselves before being released and ordered to leave the area immediately.

But the rallies are continuing – although there is a reduction in the number of demonstrators – in other parts of the country. Lagos, Benin City in Edo State, and Port Harcourt in Rivers State are also witnessing protests.
