The Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kano State addressed the press regarding the recent ruling by the Federal High Court No. 1, Kano, on the lingering litigation arising from the abolishment of the five emirates and the deposition of the former emirs, including the deposed emir of eight metropolitan local governments.

Speaking on behalf of His Excellency Governor Abba K. Yusuf and the Kano State Government, the Attorney General stated that the government acknowledges the court’s ruling and views it as upholding the rule of law.

The court unequivocally reaffirmed the validity of the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, which was passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and assented to by the Executive Governor on May 23, 2024, at 5:10 pm.

The Attorney General emphasized the fundamental importance of this part of the judgment, as it validates all actions taken by the government before the emergence of the interim order issued by the court. This means that the abolishment of the five emirates created in 2019 and the deposition of the five emirs are sustained by the Federal High Court.

As a result of the ruling, Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the emir of Kano. The judge also granted the government’s application for a stay of proceedings until the Court of Appeal deals with the appeal before it on jurisdiction.

The Attorney General pointed out that the signing of the law and the reinstatement of Emir Muhamamd Sunusi II were done on May 23, 2024, before the interim order was served on the government on May 27, 2024.

Following the court’s ruling, the Kano State Government has directed the State Commissioner of Police to remove the deposed emir of the eight metropolitan local governments from the government property where he is trespassing.

The government has already concluded arrangements for the general reconstruction and renovation of the property, including the demolishing and reconstruction of the dilapidated wall fence with immediate effect.

The Attorney General congratulated the people of Kano State and called on them to remain peaceful and celebrate the success of the people without any hitch. He prayed for Allah SWT to continue to protect the state and the government.
