In a tragic case that highlights the severe flaws plaguing Nigeria’s criminal justice system, a man awaiting trial for nine years passed away just a day before a ruling was finally delivered in his long-delayed case.

The case, as recounted by pro bono lawyer Grace Okpo, centered around a defendant identified only as “Mr. Man,” who had been languishing in custody since 2015 while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Despite repeated efforts by Okpo and her team to secure his release or expedite the proceedings, bureaucratic delays and procedural hurdles continued to prolong the man’s ordeal.

On the day the court was finally set to rule on an application to strike off the case, Okpo was met with the devastating news that her client had passed away the previous day, just hours before the long-awaited ruling. In a somber moment, the lawyer informed the magistrate that her application had now changed to a request for an order to release the man’s body to his family for burial.

The tragic turn of events left the courtroom in stunned silence, a poignant reflection of the human cost of Nigeria’s overburdened and inefficient justice system. Law school students present in the courtroom were visibly shaken, with one expressing doubts about pursuing a legal career after witnessing such a travesty of justice.

Okpo’s account, shared on social media, has ignited a firestorm of outrage and calls for immediate action to address the systemic issues that contributed to this tragic outcome. Critics have pointed to chronic underfunding, a shortage of judges and an overreliance on outdated procedures as major contributing factors to the backlog of cases and unjustifiable delays.

Legal experts and human rights advocates have urged the government to prioritize much-needed reforms, including increasing funding for the judiciary, streamlining court processes, and implementing measures to ensure the timely dispensation of justice.
