The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has dismissed as false and misleading reports linking the institution to a viral video in which a lecturer was allegedly caught in an inappropriate act with a female student.

The video, which began circulating online on Wednesday, showed some students forcing their way into an office in an attempt to apprehend a man alleged to be a lecturer. The man was said to have escaped through a window after the students gained access to the office.

A voiceover in the video claimed that the incident occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and described the man as a lecturer known for inappropriate conduct.

However, in a statement issued on Thursday by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the institution said it had verified the claims and found them to be false.

Attah said the incident did not happen at UNIZIK and that neither the man seen in the viral video nor the alleged female student was connected to the university.

“The attention of the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been drawn to a viral video and news reports circulating online about a lecturer erroneously identified as a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University reportedly caught in an inappropriate behaviour with a student within a university premises,” the statement read.

“We wish to categorically state that the report is not only false but misleading. After due verification, it has been established that the incident did not happen at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

“The man in question seen in the viral video is also not a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. For the records, no staff or student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is connected in any way to the said incident.”

The university said it would not allow false reports to damage its reputation, stressing that it upholds high standards of professional conduct and discipline among staff and students.

It added that the management maintains zero tolerance for the exploitation of students under any guise.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe University upholds the highest standards of professional conduct and discipline among its staff and students. Staff members of the university are guided by strong ethics, while the university management also has zero tolerance for students’ exploitation under any guise,” the statement added.

Attah blamed the spread of the report on misinformation, disinformation and the rush by some online platforms to break news without proper verification.

He said the rise of citizen journalism and social media had made it easier for falsehoods to spread, but noted that digital communication also provides opportunities for fact-checking before publication.

The university urged members of the public, media organisations and online platforms to stop circulating the unverified report and to immediately retract or correct publications linking UNIZIK to the incident.

It also advised journalists to verify information with appropriate authorities before publication, while reaffirming its open-door approach to information and communication.
