Muna Esegine Esq., LLM, has thrown her hat into the ring, vying to become the next Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch, widely known as the Tiger Bar. The hotly contested election is slated for the 28th of June at the Branch Secretariat.

While not the first contender for this coveted position, Esegine’s spirited bid marks another milestone in the continued push for greater gender parity in the leadership of this prestigious branch. More than three women have challenged for the chairmanship in previous elections.

Muna, fondly called “Mummy Tiger,” “Munalicious,” and “The Fair One,” brings an impressive repertoire to the race. An LLM graduate from Lagos State University and currently pursuing a PhD in Law from Babcock University, Muna has a distinguished career in the NBA and other professional bodies, having served as the former Publicity Secretary and the first and only female Secretary of the Ikeja Branch. She has also made notable contributions as a member of the NBA Disciplinary Committee and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

In an exclusive interview with TheNigeriaLawyer, Muna detailed her vision and program for the Ikeja Branch. Her campaign platform focuses on promoting gender equality, enhancing professional development opportunities, and strengthening community outreach programs. Muna has pledged to protect and defend the dignity of members, expand capacity to keep up with evolving legal trends, strengthen relationships with authorities, institute mentorship and earning programs for junior lawyers, and address issues faced by official bar members in their daily duties.

Muna’s commitment to the Ikeja Branch is driven by her passion to serve and her vision to make the branch prosperous beyond its renowned activism. She aims to mentor and train young lawyers, increase the earnings of all lawyers, and improve their welfare through regular training sessions, mentorship programs, and proactive engagement with the bench.

As a contestant for the Chairman position, Muna is dedicated to supporting female lawyers by being a role model, sharing her experiences, mentoring, creating networking opportunities, providing tailored professional development programs, and addressing any discriminatory practices they may face.

Muna also plans to ensure the financial stability of the branch by seeking sponsorships and partnerships, hosting fee-based conferences, and renting out branch facilities. She is committed to promoting unity within the branch by preaching love and tolerance and ensuring transparency and accountability by adhering to the Uniform Bye-Laws, providing financial reports to members, and implementing strict financial guidelines.

Regardless of the election outcome, Muna Esegine’s historic candidacy for the NBA Ikeja Branch Chairmanship represents a significant milestone for gender equality in the Nigerian legal profession. Her vision and dedication to the branch’s progress have already inspired many, and her impact is expected to be felt in the years to come.
