*Orders Police Takeover of Kano Emir’s Palace

The High Court of Justice of Kano State has granted an order of interim injunction restraining the Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye from parading themselves as such pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by the Kano State Government.
The court order, in a suit no: K1000/2024 issued by Hon. Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of High Court No. 7, Miller Road, Kano, on May 27, 2024, was made in response to a motion ex parte filed by the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly.
The order specifically restrains Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye, respectively.
Furthermore, the court ordered the Commissioner of Police of Kano State to immediately take over the palace of the Emir of Kano, situated at State Road, Kano, and evict Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero from the palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated May 24, 2024.
The court emphasized that the order was granted in the interest of maintaining peace in Kano State. The Inspector General of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Army were also listed as defendants/respondents in the suit.
The court directed that the 1st to 5th defendants be served through the office of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, who is to ensure the immediate implementation of the court order in the interest of justice.
The motion on notice, dated May 24, 2024, has been adjourned to June 11, 2024, for hearing.
This court order comes amidst ongoing tensions in Kano State regarding the status of the emirate and the recognition of the appointed Emirs.
