The Nasarawa State Judicial Service Commission, during its Regular Meeting held on May 24, 2024, made several key decisions to enhance the state’s judiciary.

The Commission approved the appointment of Abdullahi Muhammad Lanze as the Deputy Chief Registrar of Area Courts, Sharia Court of Appeal, Lafia, effective immediately. Lanze previously served as the Chief Inspector of Area Courts at Nasarawa State Sharia Court of Appeal and a Magistrate with the Judiciary.

In addition to the appointment, the Commission considered and approved the recommendations of the Committee of Appointments, Promotions, and Discipline for the July 2023 and January 2024 Senior Staff Promotions. The Commission also ratified all acting appointments placed before it.

The Commission granted approval to the newly drafted Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers of Nasarawa State, which is applicable to all categories of Judicial Officers throughout the state. The Code of Conduct was patterned after the National Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Furthermore, the Commission approved draft copies of organizational charts for the Judicial Service Commission, High Court of Justice, Sharia Court of Appeal, and Customary Court of Appeal to ensure efficient service delivery.

The Commission also took disciplinary actions against several Magistrates. Warning letters were issued to Hon. Vincent V. Manga, Hon. Emmanuel Agbi Jatau, Hon. El Faruk Joy Azizi, and Vincent W. Gwahemba. Three other Magistrates, Usman A. Yahaya, Abdulsalam Abubakar, and Muhammad Abdulhamid Tiga, were stripped of their Magisterial/Adjudication Powers and suspended without pay for varying periods due to misconduct and abuse of discretionary powers.

The Commission reiterated its zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of discretionary powers from Magistrates, emphasizing the need to protect the image of the Judiciary. Magistrates and Staff of the Nasarawa State Judicial Service Commission were warned to desist from all misconduct, as future culpability shall be met with strict penalties, including suspension, a total ban from elevation to the higher bench, or dismissal.

Yahaya Yakubu Shafa, the Executive Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, issued the statement detailing the Commission’s decisions and actions.
