The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Comrade Chinedu Ogah (APC, Ebonyi), has urged state governments across the country to utilize the new constitutional provisions and construct modern correctional facilities to prevent jailbreaks in the country.

Comrade Ogah who spoke when the committee visited Suleja prison to inspect the damage caused by the rain that led to the jailbreak in Abuja on Friday also told the officials of three centres to ensure that they provided for the inmates.
He said: “The little token that is used to feed inmates is not enough; we need to take care of the correction service.
“The 1999 Constitution, as amended, has shifted correctional service to concurrent; therefore, all the governments of the 36 states must implement that law by building correctional services.
“One correction service was established in 1914, and most of the items used here are outdated; they cannot stand the test of time.”
He said the fence of the correctional centre collapsed due to the weakness of the facility leading to the escape of many of the inmates, some of whom had committed capital offences.
The chairman said that the budget of the correction service was not enough to do what was needed, adding that they needed more money to take care of the security of the service.
He said it was unexplainable that a little above 400 inmates were being taken care of by just five armed men, adding that such an arrangement would not work.
“They need more manpower; we are urging Mr. President to approve the recruitment of more manpower to the correction service by recruiting more men to man the correction service,” he stated.
He said such a move would help to stabilize the correctional service, adding that it would further help to checkmate any attack on the correct correctional facilities.
“The people that are recruited are going to be on the field to do their job, and such a thing will help; there would not be any other jailbreak.
“The correctional service needs more vehicles; the staff of the correctional service is supposed to live in the barracks; they are supposed to live near them so that a lot of this incident can be taken care of,” he noted.
