Political figures and business leaders, on Monday, attended the memorial service in honour of the late Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

The event titled ‘Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – A Professional Legacy’, billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote, named the 120km road leading to his refinery in Lagos after the late CEO in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the project.

Other dignitaries who attended the event include Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos); Governor Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Chairman, Coronation Capital, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede; and the Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Segun Agbaje; among others.

In a tribute posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu wrote, “My heart is heavy with grief as I mourn the loss of a dear friend, brother, and visionary leader, Herbert Wigwe. Lagos has lost a gem, and I, a trusted and valued friend.

“Herbert was a beacon of hope and progress. His absence leaves a void that words cannot fill.

“As we mourn, I extend my deepest sympathies to everyone whose life was touched by Herbert. In this moment of profound loss, let us come together in love and solidarity, honouring his memory by continuing his vision for a brighter future. Together, we will heal, remember, and strive forward.”

Similarly, Abiodun wrote on X, “Mr. Wigwe’s impact on our nation’s socio-economic landscape will never be forgotten, as his contributions were countless and far-reaching. His dedication to humanity was unmatched, and his legacy of dignity and service will always be remembered.

“As we mourn his passing, we take solace in the knowledge that Mr. Wigwe, his wife, and son are now at peace in the arms of God. May we find the strength to cope with this profound loss, and may God provide comfort to his children and family in this difficult time.”

On February 9, Wigwe, his wife, Doreen; son Chizi; and a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, died in a helicopter crash that occurred near a border town between California and Nevada in the United States.
