The Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board has appealed to the National Association of Delta State Students (NADETSSU) to call off their planned protest regarding non-payment of the 2023 bursary award.

In a statement, the Executive Secretary Dr. Godfrey Enita notified the students that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the payment of the bursaries and directed that disbursement to qualified students commence in the first week of February 2024.

While empathizing with the students, Enita stated that any protests at this time would be counterproductive and unpredictable given the history of youth protests in Nigeria.

He praised Gov. Oborevwori as being youth-friendly and interested in youth development under his ‘M.O.R.E’ agenda. Enita described the Governor as a father figure who has demonstrated exceptional love for students.

Enita urged solidarity with the Governor at this time instead of protests. He thanked the students and NADETSSU leadership for their patience and understanding so far.

It remains to be seen if the assurances will be sufficient to convince NADETSSU to suspend its plan to organize bursary protests across the state. However, the notification of an approved payment timeline indicates progress on an issue that sparked complaints among Delta State students.
