It was all fun and excitement at Alliance Francaise, Ikoyi when kids and their parents came in numbers to witness globally celebrated writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, present her first-ever children’s book, ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’.

•Chimamanda with former president Obasanjo, at the launch of her first children’s picture book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” in Lagos, at the weekend.

The evening celebrated the power of storytelling and the importance of reading.

The event brought together a diverse and passionate group of individuals, including political and business leaders, distinguished personalities, notable celebrities, book lovers, writers, and art enthusiasts, all united by a common purpose – to celebrate the first children’s picture books by one of the world’s literary icons.

The array of speakers and guests included former president, Olusegun Obasanjo; Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Yusuff Ahmed; former minister of Education and Vice President for the World Bank’s Africa region, Oby Ezekwesili; Chairman at Abumet Nigeria, Executive Vice Chairman of Globacom, Bella Disu; renowned boardroom guru and Harvard Business School‘s Senior Lecturer, Hakeem Belo-Osagie; Senior Pastor of The Trinity House, Ituah Ighodalo, Chairperson at Women in Successful Careers, Amina Oyagbola, among others.

“Your children are not reading because you’re not reading,” said Chimamanda while speaking on the critical importance of reading.

“A problem with our country is that our ability to think critically has really declined. No matter how busy we are, we can create time for reading,” she said.

Speaking on the theme: “Why Reading Matters,” former president Obasanjo praised Chimamanda for her groundbreaking literary works and harped on the need for the nation to prevent the reading culture from dying.

“They say if you want to hide something, put it in a book. That shows the extent to which we are not a reading nation. We must read to internalise and gain wisdom. If you want to continue to increase in knowledge, understanding and as a human, then you must be a reader,” he said.

Former vice president Yemi Osinbajo also joined the conversation via a pre-recorded telecast where he spoke on why reading matters and “the power of books in shaping values and expanding our world view for good or ill.”

Commending Chimamanda for foraying into children’s books, he said: “Getting children to read early is possibly the most priceless thing one could ever do for a child.”

Anchored by book reviewer and Channels Book Club host, Kunle Kasumu, the event included a question and answer session, book signing, and a dedicated area for children to engage in “read and play” activities.

Children and adults went home with gifts from Santa and signed copies of ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’, among other delightful souvenirs and memorable activities.
