Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie launched her first children’s book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf,” at a special event hosted at the Alliance Française in Ikoyi on Friday, December 29, 2023.

The launch event, titled “Christmas Magic with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,” was attended by several high-profile figures, including former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Former Minister of Education Dr Oby Ezekwesili, and lawyer and immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata.
Among the notable attendees was Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Institute of Continuing Legal Education (NBA-ICLE) and a childhood friend of Chimamanda Adichie’s. Speaking on the sidelines of the glitzy event, Tobenna Erojikwe emphasised the importance of books and reading, especially for children.
“The publication of this book at this time is of such great significance because of the declining interest in reading and in books,” Tobenna Erojikwe commented. “We are a product of our experiences and exposure, and books are fundamental to our ability to think critically and to evaluate situations in an enlightened context.”
Tobenna Erojikwe, who grew up with Chimamanda Adichie in Nsukka, went on to say: “The exposure that we had to books at an early age enabled us to experience places, people, and cultures that we would otherwise have been oblivious to.”
The new children’s book was formally presented by former president Obasanjo, businessman Keem Bello-Osagie, and other dignitaries at the event. Published by Knopf, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” aims to inspire a love for reading among young children.
Attended by the cream of Nigerian society, the exclusive book launch was the highlight of the Christmas social calendar. Tobenna Erojikwe’s presence and enthusiastic endorsement underscored the wide appeal of Chimamanda Adichie’s magical new story book for children.
