The Lagos State Judicial Service Commission recently wrote to only NBA branch chairmen revealing names of shortlisted candidates being considered to serve as judges.

The confidential list of about 20 candidates has sparked criticism over the opaque judge selection process.

Bayo Akinlade, former NBA Ikorodu Branch chair and anti-corruption advocate, expressed concern over the secrecy around judicial appointments. “We must move from this closed-door style that creates doubts in the public’s mind,” he asserted.

Akinlade questioned why comments were only sought on a subset of candidates when over 200 had applied. “It’s unfortunate only select chairmen see the list,” he added.

His organization, Fight Against Corruption in the Judiciary (FIACIJ), argues applicant names should be published openly. “Judges are accountable to the people, not just influential figures,” a statement read.

FIACIJ ultimately urges more transparency from the heads of courts and National Judicial Council. The group contends secretive selection methods risk undermining Nigeria’s justice system integrity.

The renewed spotlight on Lagos’ judicial vetting process has sparked wider calls for judge candidate lists and selection criteria to be made accessible to all rather than kept behind closed doors.
