The Nigerian Bar Association Institute of Continuing Legal Education (NBA-ICLE) has secured a landmark deal to provide specialised training in oil and gas law to 1,000 lawyers across the South-South Geopolitical Zone.

This was announced in a press statement by the Chairman of the NBA-ICLE Governing Board, Tobenna Erojikwe.

According to Tobenna Erojikwe, the fully-funded training programme is the outcome of months of negotiations between the NBA-ICLE leadership and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). The NCDMB has agreed to fully finance the week-long training, including transportation, accommodation, and honoraria for resource persons.

“We are delighted at this opportunity, which is the outcome of several months of interactions and negotiations between the NCDMB and the Board of NBA-ICLE,” Tobenna Erojikwe said.

The hybrid training will take place in Bayelsa State in the first quarter of 2024. It aims to build the capacity of lawyers on legal aspects of oil and gas operations, transactions, energy transition, and content development. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tobenna Erojikwe described the training as the first of a series that will cover lawyers from all geopolitical zones. “The understanding between the NCDMB and the NBA is that this hybrid training will be the first of many that will cover the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria,” he disclosed.

Tobenna Erojikwe urged members of the legal profession to take advantage of this opportunity. He also hinted at more partnerships in the pipeline to provide career development and capacity-building opportunities abroad and locally, including secondments, mentorships, and work placements.

The NBA-ICLE Chairman added that the initiative is one of the ongoing efforts to secure funded training and mentorship opportunities for Nigerian lawyers both locally and internationally.

The landmark deal has been hailed as a game-changer for capacity building in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Stakeholders describe it as the largest single investment in training for energy lawyers in Nigeria’s history.

The NCDMB is a government agency responsible for monitoring and implementing Nigerian content policies in the oil and gas industry. The NBA-ICLE focuses on continuing legal education for lawyers in Nigeria.
