Senator Dino Melaye, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the Kogi state governorship election, emerged victorious at his polling unit but boycotted the overall exercise across the state.

At his polling unit 004 in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Melaye garnered 210 votes compared to just 22 for his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival Ahmed Ododo.

However, the PDP flagbearer was conspicuously absent during voting and made no personal appearance at his polling unit.

He said: “INEC must cancel the election in the 5 local governments of Kogi-Central. The election in Okene, Okehi, Ajaoukuta, Adavi, and Ogori/Mangogo is a scam coordinated from the highest level of INEC.”

Sources within Melaye’s camp indicate he deliberately avoided voting to avoid legitimizing the process. His followers also boycotted the election.

According to PDP chieftains, Melaye believes the election results were already predetermined irrespective of the actual votes cast.

Turnout was low at Melaye’s polling unit as just 252 voters were accredited out of 819 registered voters. Other parties like ADC and SDP got insignificant numbers.

Despite winning his polling booth, Melaye’s refusal to mobilize his supporters over perceptions of bias by electoral officials is seen hampering the PDP’s chances.

The boycott tactic has been employed by opposition parties in past Nigerian elections deemed unfavorable. Melaye adopted an indifferent stance from the get-go and did not vote himself.
