Senator Magnus Abe of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has appealed for calm between Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

He stated that irrespective of their rift, Rivers can have only one sitting governor at a time.

Speaking on national television, Abe noted that the impasse between Wike and Fubara mirrors past intra-party conflicts in Rivers to the detriment of development. He warned that the state risks losing out again if the row continues and distracts governance.

The SDP governorship candidate implored both leaders to sheathe their swords and focus on moving the state forward in unity. He said the circumstances surrounding Fubara’s emergence as governor are immaterial in the face of serving Rivers people diligently.

Abe recalled that similar standoffs between Wike and his allies stalled progress and attracted federal sanctions against the state in the past. He advised stakeholders to learn from history and prevent negative consequences from the present crisis.

The former Secretary to the State Government called on Wike and Fubara to place the interests of citizens above political differences for the good of Rivers. He reiterated that only one governor can function at a time regardless of their rift.

Analysts hail Abe’s non-partisan intervention as statesmanlike. His appeal aligns with calls for reconciliation and against actions that can further polarize the polity or create instability.
