Senior lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, has asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed Nigerians despite the Supreme Court judgment upholding the 2023 election results.

In a statement issued in Lagos regarding the apex court’s ruling on the presidential election, Mr. Adegboruwa noted that although the failure to transmit results electronically does not nullify the outcome, it erodes public confidence in elections.

“INEC is still busy assuring Nigerians that future election results will be transmitted electronically. What is the penalty for the electoral umpire that failed Nigerians upon its own voluntary undertaking?” he asked.

The senior advocate stressed that the National Assembly needs to amend the Electoral Act to ensure transparent elections rather than “continuing in this fashion.”

While INEC has promised electronic transmission for forthcoming polls, Adegboruwa urged the commission to match its public assurances with action to help Nigeria.

The SAN also frowned at public officials abandoning duties to attend court proceedings, resulting in loss of man-hours and productivity.

Adegboruwa called on the National Assembly to scrutinize the appeal court and Supreme Court judgments with the aim of bolstering the electoral legal framework.

The senior lawyer contends that despite the apex court verdict, INEC failed in its duties by not uploading results electronically as promised.
