The Supreme Court’s spokesperson Festus Akande has stated that this morning’s fire outbreak at the court will have no effect on the pending presidential election petition.

Speaking during an Arise TV interview, Akande revealed that an electrical fault caused the blaze in one of the justices’ chambers. He emphasized there is no connection between the minor incident and the election case.

Per Akande, the affected chamber contained computer equipment and a library used by occupying justices. Only books and IT resources in that office were damaged, and these are replaceable.

He reiterated that electrical faults can happen anywhere and it has no bearing as the court hears the appeal seeking to nullify President Bola Tinubu’s disputed victory. Records related to the case are kept digitally and securely.

Akande stressed that it’s business as usual at the Supreme Court. With the fire limited to a single chamber unrelated to the election suit, he affirms it will proceed unaffected by today’s incident. The court is expected to soon schedule hearing dates for the petition.
