A video showing a young black gymnast being skipped for a medal at a ceremony in Ireland while her white peers were awarded has sparked outrage and accusations of racism.

The incident occurred in March 2022 at a GymStart event by Gymnastics Ireland.

Footage shows the young girl excitedly awaiting her medal before being overlooked as the line of other girls all receive one. The last medal is taken by the official. Gymnastics Ireland apologized but the girl’s parents allege racism behind the snub.

The video went viral after resurfacing online recently. Olympic champion Simone Biles condemned the “heartbreaking” incident and shared a message of support to the girl. Many pointed out only the black child was denied an award.

Gymnastics Ireland claims the issue was settled in August but the mother disputes this, saying no genuine apology was received. The body says the official self-reported their “honest mistake” and issued a written apology.

But many find the explanation unsatisfactory and indicative of racial bias. The incident has sparked intense backlash from the gymnastics community and public. Athletes like Jordan Chiles have rallied behind the young girl.

The controversy has ignited serious questions about diversity and inclusion in the historically white-dominated sport. Gymnastics Ireland faces mounting pressure to transparently address the racial undertones of this troubling case.
