The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has started installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across campus to address allegations of sexual harassment. The cameras are being placed in lecturers’ offices and other strategic locations.

The move follows rising cases of sexual misconduct by lecturers at the university. Recently, UNIZIK removed and suspended some faculty accused of sexually harassing students after complaints were raised.

While some professors apparently oppose the CCTV plan as an invasion of privacy, the Vice Chancellor Charles Esimone insists it will proceed. He stated lecturers paid with public funds should not have secretive discussions with students.

The CCTV installation aims to boost student confidence and transparency in faculty interactions. The cameras have already been deployed in the Faculty of Law, with other faculties to follow.

University spokesperson Dr. Emma Ojukwu confirmed the CCTV system is part of efforts to tackle sexual harassment on campus. A central control room will manage the footage, along with increased motorized patrols.

The total cost is unclear until the project is complete. But UNIZIK remains committed to implementing this measure to better protect students from harassment by faculty.
