In a fight that left the MMA world stunned, Sean Strickland pulled off a major upset in the main event of UFC 293 by defeating Israel Adesanya to become the new UFC middleweight champion.

Despite entering the Octagon as a massive underdog against one of the sport’s all-time greats, Strickland secured a unanimous decision victory.

The bout unfolded in an unexpected manner, with Adesanya, renowned for his kickboxing skills, struggling to find his rhythm due to Strickland’s relentless pressure on the feet. The fight remained standing throughout, but Strickland effectively outworked the champion and kept him pinned against the cage.

Despite being the heavy favorite with odds of -650, Adesanya never seemed to find his groove. Strickland displayed a remarkable level of composure from the opening bell, dictating the pace and nearly finishing the fight with a ferocious flurry in the first round that severely rocked Adesanya.

Adesanya showed signs of a resurgence at the start of the second round, having his most productive five minutes of the fight. However, much of his success seemed to stem from Strickland’s decreased offensive output.

Throughout the contest, Adesanya never appeared to be in control. Despite his striking prowess, he appeared disoriented by Strickland’s straightforward pressure-based strategy. Instead of utilizing his superior technical striking skills, Adesanya circled the cage’s perimeter, rarely planting his feet to launch any significant attacks.

The final scorecards reflected Strickland’s dominance, with all three judges scoring the fight 49-46 in his favor, making him the unexpected new UFC middleweight champion.

After the historic win, Strickland expressed his respect for Adesanya, acknowledging him as a formidable opponent who had defeated many of his friends with ease. He also credited the motivation he received from Australian fans during the fight.

This bout marked Adesanya’s first title defense in his second stint as middleweight champion. After suffering a knockout loss to Alex Pereira in late 2022, he made a successful comeback earlier this year to reclaim the championship.

Originally slated to defend the title against Dricus Du Plessis, a feud between the two fighters was centered around their respective claims of being “more African.” However, when Du Plessis was unable to compete at UFC 293, Strickland stepped in, with many doubting his chances against Adesanya’s striking expertise.

In a surprising turn of events, Strickland defied the odds and dealt a significant blow to Adesanya’s legacy as one of the sport’s greatest fighters.

Adesanya, in his post-fight press conference, acknowledged Strickland’s superiority on the night and expressed his desire to be with his team and loved ones. He handed over the press conference to his coach, Eugene Bareman, before concluding, “I want to go chill, have some breakfast, build my family, and till next time.”
