France responded on Friday to Niger’s military rulers who had demanded the expulsion of the French ambassador in Niamey, stating that the “putschists lack the authority” to carry out such an action. The new military leadership had given the French envoy, Sylvain Itte, a 48-hour ultimatum to leave the country.

In a statement provided to AFP, the French Ministry acknowledged the request made by the putschists but clarified that their authority did not extend to making such demands. The Ministry emphasized that the approval for the ambassador’s presence in Niger originates solely from the legitimate elected authorities of Niger.

Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that they consistently evaluate the security and operational situation of their embassy. This reiterates their commitment to safeguarding their diplomatic presence under all circumstances.

Earlier in the day, the military rulers, who assumed control in Niamey on July 26, released an official announcement via the foreign ministry. They stated that their decision to expel the French ambassador was a response to his refusal to attend a meeting with the minister, as well as other actions by the French government that they deemed contrary to Niger’s interests.

France has consistently supported the calls from the West African bloc ECOWAS to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who is currently detained with his family at the presidential palace. France maintains a contingent of 1,500 soldiers stationed in Niger, assisting Bazoum in combating the long-standing threat of jihadist forces within the country.

ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on the new ruling regime and has warned of potential military intervention if the current leaders fail to relinquish power and reinstate Bazoum.
