Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has undertaken a significant diplomatic initiative by meeting with the military leaders of Niger following a recent turn of events.

The meeting between Sanusi and the junta’s military leadership comes in the wake of a canceled meeting between the junta and representatives of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and a prominent US diplomat. The efforts of an ECOWAS-raised delegation to broker peace were unsuccessful as the military rulers declined to engage in discussions.

However, recent developments have shown that Sanusi, who holds a position of reverence due to his leadership within the Tijjaniya sect, which boasts a substantial following in Niger, is stepping into the diplomatic arena. Sanusi holds the esteemed position of Khalifa within the Tijjaniya sect in West Africa, further amplifying his influence.

The former Emir of Kano was seen in footage engaging with the junta leaders alongside the Sultan of Damagaran. Damagaran, the third-largest city in Niger, played host to this significant meeting.

Sources close to the situation have indicated that Sanusi’s presence and discussions with the junta leadership aim to establish a platform for negotiation with the Niger junta. As diplomatic tensions linger, Sanusi’s role is viewed as instrumental in creating a potential pathway for dialogue and resolution.
